What’s so great about an orgasm? If you said that “reaching the pinnacle of ecstasy” is pretty damned great (or some variation on the theme), you’d be correct. Honestly, what more can one ask for? That said, researchers have determined that orgasms are actually great for a bunch of other assorted reasons.
According to the Cleveland Clinic , orgasms can provide several health benefits, including improvements in:
- Headache and other pain relief
- Heart health
- Menstrual cramps
- Self-confidence
- Sleep
- Stress
That’s right, even stress can be tempered by orgasms. How? A study in Science Direct, titled: Sexually Induced Orgasm to Improve Postpartum Pelvic Floor Muscle Strength and Sexual Function , states, “During orgasm, your body releases dopamine, known as the feel-good hormone, and oxytocin, sometimes called the love drug. These hormones increase feelings of happiness and other positive emotions, and they counteract the stress hormone (aka cortisol).” Orgasms can lend a hand in other areas of wellness, too, like improving pelvic floor health in some women.
These bonuses are pretty darn fabulous for women who can achieve orgasm without any issue. But what if you’re one of the approximately 21% of those who either want to have them and can’t, or who are experiencing orgasm dysfunction? We recommend talking with your doctor. Sure, it might be awkward, but seeking medical counsel for orgasm is really no different than asking about any other physiological process. If your health care provider isn’t receptive, you might want to seek out a specialist.
