What is World Compliment Day and How Did It Start?

World Compliment Day comes but once a year on March 1, but let this be a day that’s dedicated to learning how to communicate to your partner in a way that makes them feel special. Giving compliments is easy, plus it feels really good, but doing them in a way that will pull at the heartstrings takes a bit of finesse.

National Compliment Day was founded by Hans Poortvliet from the Netherlands. His goal was to inspire people to show appreciation through words as opposed to gifts. If one of the approaches below sounds fitting for the girl you can’t stop thinking about, use them in sweet texts for her or even telling her in person makes her feel wanted and is a win-win for all.

Cute Things to Say to Your Girlfriend

1. Say (more than) thanks.

A great way to make your partner feel acknowledged is by practicing gratitude. You can do so by emphasizing how the impact they’re making in your life encourages your personal growth. It not only communicates to them that they’re adding positivity to your life, but helps you tell them the ways in which you need to be supported. The road, of course, goes both ways, so make sure you’re doing the same!

You can say things like:

“Your support made this possible for me, I really mean it.”

“Thank you for helping me with my assignment the other day. You make my days and being around you so easy.”

“I woke up today feeling extra grateful to have met you and I look forward to seeing you on Friday.”

2. Compliment them in a different language.

If you’re at the fun and flirtatious early stage of a relationship, using a different language to give a compliment is a clever tactic. Not only does it show that you want to express your feelings, it does so with a surprise element. It can be anything from sending romantic songs in different languages to learning how to say “I love you” in different ways. And if your partner is bilingual, this is your opportunity to impress them in the languages that they know.

You can say things like:

“No importa que nos separe la distancia, siempre habrá un mismo cielo que nos una.”

“Jag älskar dig.”

3. Be as specific as possible.

If your goal is to make someone feel special, don’t send them overused compliments that they’ve heard before. It can make them feel like any other person, so be as specific as possible. You can tie it into something you love about their personality, interests and hobbies, or even an inside joke you both share. As a rule of thumb, you want to mirror what you know brings your partner happiness.

You can say things like:

“Now I can see how you won Class Clown in high school. I’ve never laughed so hard like I did today.”

“Now that I know you’re better than me in ping pong, can I ask you for lessons?”

4. Compliment their appearance in an appropriate context.

Although many sources will recommend you to not mention someone’s appearance while complimenting them, it can work wonders in good context. If you’re only focusing on how someone looks, there’s no doubt they can misinterpret you for being shallow and disingenuous, but if it’s related to goals they’re pursuing, like getting healthier, then those words of encouragement can motivate them to keep at their goals. The whole point is, looking better is their goal, so that’s what you should be supporting.

You can say things like:

“You are looking so strong.”

“I’ve noticed a beautiful glow about you especially since you’ve been pursuing your fitness goals.”

“There are so many wonderful things about you, having nice legs is just a bonus.”

You know the person best, so you’ll know what feels right to send them. Hopefully we’ve helped you spark up some ideas, since there are so many ways to compliment someone!
