It is unknown where exactly and by whom this day was started, but there is some consensus that it was started on June 5, 1945. On June 6, 1944, over 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, in France, beginning the push to retake Western Europe from the Nazis. A day before the invasion was the last day that Nazis could have had the delusion that their Reich would last 1,000 years, hence the day is celebrated on June 5th. Although hard fighting remained after the D-Day landing, such as during the Battle of the Bulge, with the invasion the Allies moved inexorably towards victory, and the Nazis’ delusions were put to rest.
Festival of Popular Delusions Day is being observed today! It has been observed annually on June 5th since 1945.
