Today we celebrate chocolate-covered peanuts. They are often sold in bulk vending machines, at movie theaters, and at concession counters. Today there are many brands, but the original chocolate-covered peanuts brand was Goobers, first sold in 1925 by the Blumenthal Chocolate Company. It is now owned by Nestlé. “Goober” is a slang word for peanut around the world; it was likely derived from the Gullah word for peanut, which is “guber.” Peanut M&M’s, which are essentially chocolate-covered peanuts, were introduced in 1954. They were tan until 1960 when colors were introduced.
National Chocolate-Covered Peanuts Day, also known as National Chocolate-Covered Nuts Day, is observed next on Monday, February 25th, 2019. It has always been observed annually on February 25th.
