Cinco de Marcho marks the beginning of the season to train the liver for St. Patrick’s Day, a holiday known for drinking that is just 12 days away. Cinco de Marcho is a drinking day for those who don’t often drink, and want to be prepared to drink on the upcoming holiday. In 2007, the creators of the holiday, who go by the names Lady O’ Le and Carlos Fantastico, heard a friend was coming to visit during St. Patrick’s Day. Although not teetotalers, they rarely drank and knew they had to prepare themselves for the drinking that was to come. They started their liver training by drinking a margarita at a Mexican restaurant on March 5. They thought it was fitting that it was the 5th of the month, just like Cinco de Mayo, and that they were drinking a green drink—the color associated with St. Patrick’s Day. Cinco de Marcho is not just a day, but a 12 day season leading up to St. Patrick’s Day, with the closing ceremony on that holiday. Besides the opening festivities of drinking margaritas, parties can be held at any time during the season.
Cinco de Marcho is being observed today! It has been observed annually on March 5th since 2007.
